The Republican government issued this 5 Pesetas note in 1937 under severe wartime pressure — the Civil War had fractured Spain's monetary infrastructure, with Nationalist and Republican zones running parallel and increasingly divergent currency systems. The FNMT in Madrid was operating under siege conditions for much of the conflict, and small-denomination notes like this one were printed partly to address a chronic shortage of coin, which had been hoarded or melted down.
The "replica" designation in modern catalogs signals that surviving originals are sufficiently scarce that reproductions circulate in the collector market — worth confirming authenticity on any example offered at scale.
