| 裏面の説明 | Central device features the provisional coat of arms of Spain, quartered with the castles of Castile and the lions of León, with the kingdom of Granada in the base quarter and the arms of Aragon represented by vertical pales, all surmounted by a large mural crown. Flanking the shield are the Pillars of Hercules, each draped with a ribbon scroll bearing the motto PLUS ULTRA, evoking Spain's imperial heritage. Mintmaster initials S·N· and M· appear at the lower flanks of the design. The circular legend LEY 900 MILESIMAS * 40 PIEZAS EN KILOG· runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5 PESETAS is boldly inscribed along the lower margin. The entire design is contained within a beaded border. |

The Provisional Government that issued this coin came to power following the Glorious Revolution of September 1868, which deposed Isabella II after decades of political instability and dynastic controversy. Spain's new rulers needed coinage immediately — and they needed it to look nothing like the monarchy they had just overthrown. The result was a deliberately republican-facing design produced while the government simultaneously searched for a new king, a search that would eventually drag half of Europe into diplomatic crisis and provide the immediate trigger for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Cal#2 places this among the earliest documented varieties of the type.
