Fabara is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, and like dozens of Aragonese villages during the Civil War, it collectivized under anarchist influence after the summer of 1936. The Colectividad 'Renacer' — "Rebirth" — issued its own scrip because the Republican zone suffered acute coin shortages throughout 1937, with hoarding and the collapse of normal commerce making small-denomination exchange nearly impossible. Local collectives filled the gap with paper fractional currency that functioned within their own economic units.
Imprenta Litografia Sabadell y Cia. in Barcelona printed a considerable volume of this wartime municipal and collective scrip — the firm was one of several Barcelona printers kept busy supplying the improvised monetary needs of the Aragonese collectives until Franco's forces overran the region in 1938.
