5 Pesetas Barcelona; Preventori Judicial - Economat

The Preventori Judicial de Barcelona was a detention facility for political prisoners under the Republican administration during the Civil War. Its Economat — an internal commissary — issued scrip for use within the institution, a practice common among Republican-controlled establishments, factories, and collectives that needed to manage internal exchange without drawing on the collapsing national supply of small coinage.

Facility scrip of this type was never intended to leave the building. That any survives at all is largely accidental.
