Bilbao fell to Nationalist forces in June 1937, and the Republican-controlled Banco de España branch there issued emergency regional notes in 1936 precisely because the central Madrid apparatus had lost effective monetary control in the Basque provinces. This 5 Pesetas note belongs to that brief window of parallel Republican currency operation — a situation that produced multiple competing issue authorities across loyalist-held Spain, each printing under its own improvised mandate.
The Bilbao branch issues are notoriously short-lived in circulation terms. When the city was taken, remaining stocks were suppressed. Surviving circulated examples absorbed roughly eleven months of active use at most.
