During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply absent. Hundreds of municipalities, cooperatives, and trade unions across Catalonia responded by printing their own emergency fractional currency, and the Unió de Cooperadors de Badalona was among them. These cooperative-issued notes circulated within a tightly bounded local economy and were effectively worthless outside the issuing organization's sphere.
