Anglès is a small municipality in the Selva comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns, it faced a severe coin shortage during the early months of the Spanish Civil War after metallic currency disappeared from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. Local entities — cooperatives, town councils, trade unions — were authorized under a Generalitat de Catalunya decree to issue their own emergency paper and cardboard fractions. The Cooperativa La Unión Anglesense was one such body, issuing scrip redeemable within its own membership network rather than as general municipal currency.

The round stamp validates this as an officially authorized emission from the cooperative itself — a common authentication method when printing infrastructure was limited.
