Reverse description The central section of the Royal Shield of Arms, as designed by Matthew Dent, is displayed across the full coin field, divided by a bold cruciform framework into four quarters. The upper-left quarter features the passant guardant lion of England, partially visible; the upper-right quarter displays a fleur-de-lis and scrollwork; the lower-left quarter shows the Irish harp; and the lower-right quarter presents the rampant lion of Scotland. The denomination FIVE PENCE is inscribed horizontally across the centre of the design, bisected by the vertical division of the shield, with decorative dashes to either side.
