| Reverse description | The central section of the Royal Shield of Arms, designed by Matthew Dent as part of a jigsaw series across the decimal coinage, occupies the entire reverse field. The shield is divided by a vertical pale and a horizontal fess, with heraldic charges visible in each quadrant: a lion passant guardant in the upper left, a fleur-de-lis and scrollwork in the upper right, a harp in the lower left, and a lion passant guardant in the lower right. The denomination FIVE PENCE is inscribed horizontally across the centre of the design, bisecting the shield. |
