The Isle of Man has long issued its own coinage independently of the Royal Mint, a right rooted in the island's status as a Crown dependency with its own parliament — Tynwald, which claims to be the oldest continuous parliament in the world. The switch to nickel plated steel for this denomination mirrored a broader cost-driven shift across British Isles coinage, following the Royal Mint's own transition away from cupro-nickel for the 5p in 2012.
Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced across UK coinage in 2015, made its way onto Manx issues shortly after.
