Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the fourth definitive portrait as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicting the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara. The truncation of the bust bears the engraver's initials IRB. The Latin legend encircles the portrait, reading ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF, with the date appearing to the right of the effigy.

The upper-left and lower-right quarters display the passant guardant lions of England, while the upper-right quarter features the rampant lion of Scotland and the lower-left displays the harp of Ireland. The denomination FIVE PENCE is inscribed horizontally across the centre of the design, bisecting the shield.
