The Falkland Islands resumed full civilian administration in 1985, three years after Argentine forces occupied the islands during the 74-day war of 1982. A stable local coinage had been issued since 1974, but the small 5 pence type represented a practical resizing that mirrored the Royal Mint's own reduction of the UK 5p in 1990 — a logical alignment for a territory whose currency trades at parity with sterling. KM#4.2 distinguishes this issue from its larger predecessor by die and physical specification, not by any change in issuing authority or monetary policy.
