The Island Games — a multi-sport competition for small islands and territories — were hosted by Gibraltar in 2019, the second time the territory had done so after the inaugural 1987 edition, which Gibraltar itself founded. This 5p issue was struck as a circulation commemorative marking that hosting role, part of a broader series of denominations released for the event.
