Obverse description The tughra of Sultan Mahmud II occupies the central field, enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The calligraphic monogram, rendered in the Ottoman imperial style, incorporates the sultan's name and epithet in flowing Arabic script. The flan is irregular, as characteristic of hammered billon coinage of this period.
