Mahmud I came to power in 1730 on the back of the Patrona Halil rebellion, a violent popular uprising that deposed his predecessor Ahmed III and executed the grand vizier Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha. This coin was struck in the immediate aftermath of that upheaval, during a period when the new sultan was consolidating authority and the Ottoman monetary system was already under strain from decades of debasement in the copper follis and mangır series. KM#39 represents one of the early copper issues of his reign, a reign that would ultimately last until 1754.
