The International Year of the Child was declared by the United Nations for 1979, and India was among the nations that issued commemorative coinage to mark it. The Reserve Bank of India's decision to strike this denomination in aluminium-magnesium rather than a more durable alloy reflects the economic pragmatism of the period — India had been producing low-denomination coins in this composition since the early 1970s as copper and nickel costs rose. Circulation life was always going to be short for a coin this light.
