India's small aluminium-magnesium paise denominations were already economically marginal by the early 1980s, and the 5 paise was effectively worthless in purchasing power terms for most of this issue's lifespan. The Reserve Bank kept it in production largely to satisfy accounting requirements in a decimal system that the market had long since abandoned at street level.

Demonetized in 2011 along with all sub-10 paise coins, making late-date examples from the 1990s genuinely uncirculated by default — not from collector care, but from simple commercial irrelevance.
