Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah assumed direct control of the Nepalese government in 1960 after dismissing the elected cabinet and imprisoning Prime Minister B.P. Koirala — ending Nepal's brief experiment with multiparty democracy. Coins bearing his name from this period were issued under an absolute monarchy that had effectively suspended the constitution. KM#758 belongs to that consolidation era, when royal authority over all state institutions, including the mint, was total.
