Nepal's shift to aluminium for small-denomination coins in the early 1980s was driven by the persistent problem of base-metal coins being melted or exported across the open border with India whenever metal values exceeded face value. Aluminium made that arbitrage economically pointless. This piece circulated under Birendra, who came to the throne in 1972 and was killed along with most of the royal family in the palace massacre of June 2001.
