The Pahlavi gold coinage was institutionalized under a 1932 monetary reform that standardized the series by weight and fineness, tying Iran's gold currency directly to the franc-based gold standard. The 5 Pahlavi, the largest denomination in the series, was produced across a remarkably long window — spanning both the nationalist crisis years of Mossadegh and the Shah's White Revolution period — without any design interruption, a deliberate projection of dynastic continuity through political turbulence.
Bank Melli Tehran handled striking throughout. These were not circulation coins in any practical sense; the series functioned primarily as a vehicle for gold savings and gift-giving at Nowruz and weddings.
