The date is divided on either side of the emblem reading '20' and '05'. Below the emblem, the denomination numeral '5' appears prominently in the lower central field, with the legend 'OUGUIYA' beneath it. The circular legend 'BANQUE CENTRALE DE MAURITANIE' runs along the entire periphery of the coin. |

Mauritania abandoned the CFA franc at independence in 1973, simultaneously introducing the ouguiya and its subunit the khoum — one of only two currencies in the world denominated in fifths rather than tenths. The 5 ouguiya was restruck in copper-plated steel during 2004–2005 as part of a broader cost-reduction effort across the coinage, replacing the older bimetallic and aluminum-bronze formats that had proven expensive to produce for a relatively small circulation economy.
