Denmark's zinc coinage of the occupation years exists because the German administration requisitioned copper and other strategic metals almost immediately after the April 1940 invasion. The shift to zinc was not a Danish monetary decision — it was an imposed material substitution. Zinc corrodes aggressively in circulation, and surviving examples in genuinely clean condition are far less common than raw mintage figures suggest.
The 1942 issues in particular suffer from post-strike zinc pest, a crystalline degradation that accelerates in humid storage.
