Obverse description The Mexican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus growing from a rocky outcrop, with the eagle grasping a serpent in its beak and talons. The design is rendered in high relief with fine sculptural detail, flanked at the base by laurel and oak branches tied with a ribbon. The circular legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering. A decorative dentilated border frames the entire composition.

Reverse description The reverse depicts a detailed cartographic representation of the migratory route of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), tracing the annual journey from Canada southward through the United States to the oyamel forests of the Sierra Madre Mountains in central Mexico. The design incorporates stylized monarch butterflies in various stages of flight along the migration path, with geographic contours suggested in the background. Inscriptions identifying the commemorative occasion appear in the field, along with the denomination and date. The composition celebrates both the natural wonder of the migration and the 96th Anniversary Convention of the American Numismatic Association held in Mexico in 1987.
