Struck specifically for the American Numismatic Association's 96th anniversary convention, this piece was produced by the Mexican Mint as a limited commemorative sold directly at the 1987 ANA World's Fair of Money in San Antonio. The ANA convention issue program was a reliable revenue stream for participating mints throughout the 1980s, and Mexico's Casa de Moneda was a frequent contributor — leveraging the onza format it had refined through its bullion series.
At five troy ounces of fine silver, the striking pressure required for a 60mm planchet at this weight pushed the limits of conventional medal presses.
