Gmina Kołbaskowo introduced its local currency scrip in 2008 as part of a broader Polish municipal voucher movement that gained traction in the early 2000s, allowing small communes to stimulate local commerce outside the national monetary system. The "nurt" denomination — unique to Kołbaskowo — takes its name from the Oder River currents that define the commune's geography along the German border.
