Reverse description A large Greek numeral Є (epsilon), denoting the value of five nummi, dominates the reverse field in bold, deeply struck relief. An officina letter appears to the right of the Є, identifying the workshop responsible for the coin's production. The design is deliberately simple and monumental, reflecting Emperor Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD, which introduced denomination marks to facilitate everyday commerce. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, typical of hammered Byzantine minor coinage of this period. No exergual inscription is present.
