The Libertad series, of which this is a component, was introduced in 1982 as Mexico reasserted itself in the global silver bullion market following the catastrophic Hunts Brothers silver corner of 1980. Casa de Moneda de México — the oldest mint in the Americas, operating continuously since 1535 — positioned the onza as a direct competitor to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Silver Eagle, both of which launched within a few years of each other in the early 1980s.
The 1993 issue falls within a transitional period for Mexican monetary nomenclature: the nuevo peso designation was introduced January 1, 1993, replacing the old peso at a rate of 1,000 to one, a redenomination driven by decades of accumulated inflation.
