Uruguay's 1976 military government — which had seized power in June 1973 after dissolving parliament — used commemorative coinage aggressively as a soft-power tool during the dictatorship years. This pattern was produced for the 250th anniversary of Montevideo's founding, though the standard circulation issue ultimately appeared in a different composition. Patterns from this period rarely escaped the mint in quantity, and KM#Pn108 is among the less-documented survivors of that program.
