| Obverse description | At center, a radiant sun without a face, depicted with alternating straight and wavy rays emanating from a plain central disc, rendered in a bold, stylized manner. The national legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY curves along the periphery, reading clockwise from lower left. A small dot appears in the lower field, serving as a decorative stop to the legend. The design occupies the full flan, with the legend close to the rim. |

| Additional information |
Uruguay's 1989 monetary reform replaced the peso uruguayo at a rate of 1,000 to 1, with "nuevo" dropped from the currency name by 1994 once the redenomination was considered sufficiently absorbed. This coin belongs to the transitional series that bridged a period of severe inflation — annual rates had exceeded 60% through much of the 1980s — which explains the unusually light stainless steel construction chosen to keep production costs below face value.
