The 2012 rebasing of the Zambian kwacha lopped three zeros off all denominations, replacing the old currency at 1,000:1 following decades of inflation that had rendered the previous ngwee coins effectively worthless in circulation. This 5 ngwee was part of that redenomination's inaugural coin set, the first time small-denomination coins had any practical purchasing relevance in Zambia in years.
