The "NF" — Nouveaux Francs — overprint on this note was the direct result of De Gaulle's 1960 redenomination, which lopped two zeros off the old franc to create a currency the government hoped would feel more stable. Notes in the 500 Francs series were overprinted "5 NF" rather than replaced immediately, a stopgap that produced one of the more visually awkward issues in twentieth-century French paper money.
Serveau designed the underlying note during the early 1950s, with Marliat and Armanelli handling the intaglio work front and back — a division of engraving labor that was routine at the Banque de France's print works but produced notably uneven tonal results across the series. The overprint itself was applied in Paris after the January 1960 redenomination decree.
