| Beschrijving voorzijde | Left-facing draped bust of Chiang Kai-shek occupying the central field, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail including a Zhongshan suit collar. A circular legend in traditional Chinese characters surrounds the portrait, reading the Republic of China era year, with the characters arranged along the upper and lateral periphery of the coin. The design is unadorned, with a wide, flat rim framing the composition. |

Taiwan's 5-dollar coin has circulated continuously under a single design for over four decades — an unusual degree of monetary conservatism for any issuing authority, let alone one operating under the persistent diplomatic pressure that has defined the Republic of China's international position since losing its United Nations seat in 1971. The Central Bank simply had little incentive to redesign a coin that worked.
