| Obverse description | Round cast copper cash coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion around the perforation. The legend reads 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure,' with 常 (sang) above, 平 (pyeong) below, 通 (tong) to the right, and 寶 (bo) to the left of the central square. The characters are boldly rendered in raised relief against a flat, unadorned field, consistent with the cast production technique employed at Joseon Dynasty mints. The rim is irregular and unrefined, characteristic of sand-cast coinage of the period. |
