The inscription 昌當五三 identifies the issuing office (昌, abbreviation for Ch'angwon), the denomination indicator 當五 ('equivalent to five'), and the series or batch notation 三. Horizontal wave-like striations are visible in the lower field below the square hole, a characteristic casting feature of this issue.
