Reverse description Cast bronze reverse displaying a central square perforation with a raised square rim, surrounded by four Chinese characters in regular script arranged in cruciform order: 昌 (above), 當 (right), 三 (below), 五 (left). The inscription 昌當五三 identifies the issuing office (昌, abbreviation for Ch'angwon), the denomination indicator 當五 ('equivalent to five'), and the series or batch notation 三. Horizontal wave-like striations are visible in the lower field below the square hole, a characteristic casting feature of this issue. The outer rim is plain and slightly irregular, consistent with the hand-cast production technique.
