Obverse description The national emblem of the Mongolian People's Republic (1960–1992 type) is depicted in the central field, comprising a soyombo symbol above a landscape with mountains and a horse, framed by sheaves of grain and a cogwheel at the base, with a ribbon tied at the bottom. The Cyrillic legend БНМАУ appears above the emblem, repeated in full around the design, identifying the issuing state as the Bügd Nairamdakh Mongol Ard Uls (Mongolian People's Republic). The mint year is inscribed below the emblem.

Reverse description The large numeral '5' dominates the upper field in bold relief, with the Cyrillic denomination legend МӨНГӨ (Möngö) inscribed below in a smaller font. A decorative ornamental wreath of stylised lotus and traditional Mongolian cloud motifs (khamar ugalz) frames the lower portion of the field, converging at a lotus blossom at the base. The overall design is simple and functional, consistent with the aluminium circulation coinage of the period.
