Sinkiang's ration coinage emerged from a practical administrative problem: the province's remoteness from central mints and its large Muslim population, for whom Persian-script denominations were more legible than classical Chinese. The 5 mithqual denomination — mithqual being a weight unit borrowed from Islamic monetary tradition — was struck at Kashgar or Urumqi under conditions that were never fully standardized, producing significant die variation across the series. The uncircled dragon variant is the earlier of the two principal types, predating the bordered reverse treatment that became more common in subsequent issues.
