背面描述 The reverse displays the denomination '5M' in raised Latin characters positioned centrally within an otherwise entirely blank, undecorated field. The absence of any further design elements is characteristic of a planchet trial strike, where the reverse die carries only the minimal denomination inscription to confirm the flan's suitability for coinage production.

附加信息

Malta's decimal coinage was introduced in 1972 when the island converted from pounds, shillings, and mils to a cent-based system — though the mil denomination itself was retained as a subdivision. Planchet trials of this type were produced to test striking pressure, feed mechanisms, and alloy behavior before full production runs commenced, and were never intended for circulation. Aluminium was under serious consideration for the lower denominations given its low cost and light weight, though the final circulating 5 mils was struck in aluminium as well, making the transition from trial to production relatively seamless in material terms.
