Mess notes of this kind were a practical fix for a persistent problem: Allied forces stationed in the Middle East and North Africa during 1941–42 had chronic difficulty obtaining local small change for canteen and mess transactions. Individual units, particularly Australian ones, printed their own low-denomination scrip redeemable within the mess only — completely unofficial, with no backing beyond the unit's word.
The 4th Australian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment served in the Western Desert campaign under the 9th Division. These notes circulated among officers at a time when the regiment was engaged in anti-aircraft defence during the Siege of Tobruk.
Few survived demobilization.
