Malta's cent-based decimal system was introduced in 1972 when the pound was subdivided into 1000 mils, replacing the old sterling-linked lira system that had persisted since British colonial administration. The 5 mils sat at the lowest practical tier of that new structure. Production of the denomination continued sporadically over three and a half decades, though circulation demand was minimal — the coin's purchasing power had become effectively negligible long before the series was retired ahead of euro adoption in 2008.
