Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and recruited dozens of developing nations to mint agricultural-themed circulation coinage as a soft promotion of food security policy. Sudan's participation coincided with the Nimeiry government's brief experiment with economic liberalism following the 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement, which had temporarily stabilized the country after the first civil war.
FAO issues from this period were struck in relatively modest quantities and saw genuine circulation, leaving survivors in fine or better genuinely scarce.
