Brazil's Thesouro Nacional began issuing copper exchange notes in 1833 as a direct response to a chronic shortage of small-denomination copper coinage in circulation. These notes were explicitly redeemable for copper coin — not silver, not gold — a deliberate policy that acknowledged the monetary reality of a still-developing economy heavily reliant on base metal for everyday transactions.
The series is among the earliest paper issues attributed to the Brazilian treasury and survives in very small numbers. Most examples that do appear have been heavily handled; the 165 × 78 mm format was small enough to pass through many hands before wearing out entirely.
