Brazil's First Republic had barely existed for a year when this note entered circulation. The proclamation of the republic in November 1889 immediately destabilized the monetary system — the Thesouro Nacional was issuing notes in rapid succession to fill a vacuum left by the collapse of imperial financial arrangements. The "9th Print" designation reflects just how quickly successive emissions were being authorized and distributed during this chaotic transitional period.
The American Bank Note Company had been printing Brazilian government paper for decades by this point, a relationship that predated the republic itself. ABNC's New York facility handled much of Latin America's security printing in this period, and the quality of intaglio work on the 1890 emissions remained high regardless of the political turbulence driving the orders.
