Brazil's National Treasury turned to Perkins, Bacon & Petch in London for several of its mid-nineteenth century issues, relying on the firm's intaglio steel-engraving technology at a time when domestic printing infrastructure couldn't meet the security demands of government paper. Perkins, Bacon had already built a global clientele on that reputation — their work spans postage stamps and banknotes across dozens of issuing authorities by this period.
The "5th print" designation distinguishes successive printings within the same authorized issue rather than a redesign. Small typographic and plate wear differences between prints can help date examples more precisely than the face value alone.
