By the 17th printing of this note, the Casa da Moeda do Brasil had been producing the same basic design for years — a fact that itself reflects the budgetary and institutional inertia of the First Republic's treasury management. Serial numbering and print-run tracking across the multiple impressions of P#27 are inconsistent in surviving documentation, making precise attribution of individual specimens to a specific printing genuinely difficult.
The 5 Mil Réis denomination sat at a functionally important level in everyday Brazilian commerce during the early 1920s, a period when inflationary pressure from wartime borrowing was already eroding purchasing power. Brazil's mil-réis system would eventually collapse under that pressure, replaced by the cruzeiro in 1942.
