Comments

The Tesouro do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul issued these state bonus notes in 1930 — the same year Getúlio Vargas, a gaúcho political figure who had just been denied the federal presidency through fraud, led the Revolution of 1930 that dismantled the Old Republic entirely. Whether that timing is coincidence or reflects the state's fiscal maneuvering ahead of open political conflict is a fair question.

Printed locally by the Livraria do Globo press in Porto Alegre, this was a regional house more associated with publishing than currency production — an unusual choice that makes the Series A notes identifiably provincial in their execution.
