The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 pitted the state of São Paulo against Getúlio Vargas's federal government, and these notes — formally called "Bônus da Revolução" — were emergency instruments issued by the state treasury to fund a military campaign against the national government. São Paulo was essentially financing its own war. The conflict lasted roughly three months before federal forces prevailed, making the entire issue short-lived by necessity.
Companhia Melhoramentos, a São Paulo printing and paper firm better known for notebooks and school supplies, produced this series under obvious logistical pressure. The 1st print designation implies subsequent printings followed, suggesting initial supply ran short even within that compressed wartime window.
