| Aanvullende informatie |
Issued three years after multiparty democracy was formally enshrined in Mozambique's revised constitution, this coin entered circulation as the country was still negotiating the Rome General Peace Accords' aftermath — the 16-year civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO had only formally ended in October 1992. The metical itself had been introduced in 1980 to replace the colonial escudo at par, and by the mid-1990s rampant inflation had so eroded purchasing power that 5 meticais represented almost nothing in daily transactions.
