Liberland — a self-proclaimed micronation occupying a disputed 7 km² strip between Croatia and Serbia on the west bank of the Danube — began issuing its own currency, the Merit, after declaring independence in April 2015. The wooden composition reflects both the experimental nature of the project and its philosophical alignment with libertarian, gold-standard-adjacent thinking about alternative monetary instruments.
Wood as a striking medium dates back centuries in exonumia, but remains genuinely uncommon in modern issues.
