Rendsburg's municipal 5 Mark notgeld of 1918 belongs to the first wave of German emergency money — issued when the wartime withdrawal of coin from circulation left local governments scrambling to fill the gap. Cities with functioning local print shops moved faster than those waiting on central authority, and Rendsburg was among them.
The small dimensions are atypical for a 5 Mark value, which more commonly ran larger in this period. Whether that reflects a paper economy decision or the limits of the local printer is unrecorded.
